La primera parroquia católica en la Ciudad del Amor Fraternal recibió su nombre de San José. La Old St. Joseph's en Filadelfia fue fundada en 1733. El edificio actual es la tercera iglesia en el sitio y fue dedicada en 1839. Una pintura de 1886 de Filippo Costaggini, "La exaltación angelical de San José al cielo", adorna el techo.
In the wake of a yellow fever epidemic in 1793, which killed a tenth of the population, St. Joseph's established an orphanage to care for children left without families. The church became racially integrated in the 1790s when slaves fleeing a revolution in Santo Domingo settled in Philadelphia and some joined the church.
